i-brand e-bulletin: June/July 2007

networking tipsDear reader,

Welcome to i-brand, a newsletter that focuses on creating a powerful impact in the workplace.

When did the phrase 'time out' become so negative? The term has been coined by parents to discipline their children or to interrupt someone when they have been talking too long.

Could this be sending out the wrong message?

As the pace of life seems to be getting faster, it has become a real effort to take time out of our busy schedules and just spend time for ourselves. Many of us are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and simply disconnected. Work Life Balance can often seem like a luxury and something out of reach to a majority of people, but as life pressures get ever so more consuming I believe that the only way to be a leader in your field is to have or to get... 'a life'. By this I mean you have to reclaim time for yourself. Perhaps to some this seems selfish but can you really start to build a dynamic career or business if you have no energy? There is only so much our body can take! Believe me, I know this from personal experience.

Last month I decided to take some 'me time' and it was the best thing I have done in a long time. This is the reason there is no May edition of i-brand. When I decided I'd like to take some time out I asked myself: What would people think? How can I justify this? Am I being selfish? All these questions were answered when I listened to what my body was telling me. It was time to rejuvenate, after 4 years of working on i-define it was time for some "me time". Now I am fully focusing on having a healthy balance, and enjoying the things I love outside of work.

When I say taking "me time" it doesn't mean you have to stop work but it does mean you have to prioritise and allow yourself to create space to realign with your values, purpose and vision. See the 5 tips on credible impact below and remember, can you really be creative and inspiring when you are drained? See brand in person for an interview with someone passionate about health and vitality.

Take care,

Dawn Winder
Founder and Director

My quote of the month

" You must master your time rather than becoming a slave to the constant flow of events and demands on your time. And you must organize your life to achieve balance, harmony, and inner peace. " - Brian Tracy

5 personal branding rules for career and business

"create a space for you " - clearing out the clutter

Whether you want to improve on your skills, get a new job or increase your profits, to have the energy, motivation and drive to reach your potential you need to have cleared away your mental clutter. These are things physically or emotionally that block you from moving forward. To do this there are a few questions you can start asking yourself...

  1. Are there things in my environment I can get rid of? Things I no longer need or want?
  2. What is draining me?
  3. Where am I procrastinating and what effect is this having on me?
  4. Am I involved in the things I love doing?
  5. What do I want to be doing? Where do I want to spend my time?

How are you getting on in your career or business? Are you standing out for the right reasons? Check out our 1 minute quiz and see where there could be areas to improve.

brand in person
discovering the brand assets of...

This months brand in person is a woman who is truly living her brand, she even eats it! Karen Knowler is the Raw Food Coach and has created books, products and services around her values and philosophy of the importance of raw food.

Karen Knowler - The Raw Food Coach

name: Karen Knowler

position or title: The Raw Food Coach

company: Karen Knowler, The Raw Food Coach

website: www.therawfoodcoach.com

location: Near Ely, Cambridgeshire (but formerly of Wanstead)

What has been your most valued professional achievement?

There are many, but perhaps it is creating and launching "The Fresh Festival" - a now-annual three-day raw food festival which was the first event of its kind in the UK. It is a life-changer.

Name the five most distinctive characteristics or attributes that have helped you to achieve your success:

  1. Passion
  2. Purpose
  3. Clarity
  4. Vision
  5. Courage

What makes your business distinctive?

Raw food is still very niche as a way of eating or living, although things are definitely changing. By combining life coaching and raw food teaching I work with people on many different levels, but essentially my "raison d'etre" is to help people feed themselves optimally and develop a really strong awareness, love and respect for their body so that they can regain the energy, passion and courage that they had as a child so they can go forward and live the kind of life they really want to live without worrying whether their body or mind will be up to the job. Even though most people think what I do is "raw food", what I really do is give people the inspiration, support and tools to get back in touch with themselves. Most people are very disconnected physically or low in personal energy, so when this part of the jigsaw is rejuvenated and falls back into place, dealing with the rest of life, and of making dreams come true, is so much easier. So, I am not just food and I am not just life coaching, I am in the business of whole person transformation!

What key skills have helped 'you' your Personal Brand become distinctive?

I learned a ton about internet marketing over the past couple of years and have come to really relish it, so much so you could probably say it's one of my favourite hobbies!

I stayed true to myself and didn't try to be someone I wasn't.

I finally accepted that yes, fun and highly professional could happily co-exist within the same brand.

I had a caricature designed of myself to illustrate the way I feel and also to add an element of fun and a little sexiness to the image of raw food.

I got clear on who I am and who my ideal client is; it has helped me to have more confidence in my brand and has naturally attracted the right clients. d

Where do you look for inspiration?

I look everywhere really; my mind never sleeps and I carry a notebook in my bag and a dictaphone in my car, so I never let a great idea get away! I am always thinking of how I can "cross pollinate" and bring successful ideas from other industries into my own - a key strategy I learned from American marketing guru Jay Abraham. I also adore well designed and interesting web sites, and/or ones that use internet marketing ideas cleverly. I love anything that has some imagination or passion behind it. Bland is not brand.

When the going gets tough what helps you through?

I definitely have my diet to thank for having relentless energy as I personally eat raw foods about 99.9% of the time. I also make sure that I have a good swim and then relax in the steam room for 20 minutes at the start or end of every working day and I am lucky that I can switch off very easily and fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. Mentally, as I am a very strong believer in the philosophy that we create our own reality, I have come to hold a lot of store in that knowing and so even when the going gets really tough, I never feel that life is out of my control. Knowing that I can change or re-create any aspect of my life or business more or less at the drop of a hat purely through passion + focus + positive well-considered action is absolutely the most powerful approach I have in my mind/emotion toolbox and that has pulled me through more times than I can possibly mention!

Advice you wished you'd had when starting out?

  1. Build your business around your ideal lifestyle, not the other way around. The business needs taming and training right from the very start. With my first company I was extremely naïve, let the whole thing run away with me, lost my "life" for a fair few years and effectively created a monster!
  2. Never undervalue what you do. You lose self-respect when you do and you also don't gain it from others. Be prepared to charge what you're worth and believe you will attract the right customers or clients for you - you will.
  3. If you are going to work hard then you need to play hard. Make self-care a top priority and enjoy everything you do whether you are at work or play.
  4. Get a support system in place ASAP, especially if you are a one (wo)man band. It doesn't take long for overwhelm to set in if you don't at the very least have a bookkeeper.
  5. Be clear right from the very start what your goals are for your business and what your mission statement is. It will save infinite amounts of pain, confusion and reworking later.
  6. e 100% yourself - you will find "your people" and your work will be a whole lot more enjoyable for it.
  7. Hire a coach. Whether it's for life or business or both, you need the time and space to discuss what's going on for you, to be bolstered up when you're feeling down, to have someone else to brainstorm ideas with you and to work an inspiring and achievable plan with. Yes, coaching can feel like a big investment financially, but providing you hire the right one, the investment will come back to you a thousand-fold.

Most Valued Brand?

Nike - it's just so "to the point". There's no room not to get it.

Most inspirational famous Personal Brand or Celebrity Brand?

Probably Jordan and/or Victoria Beckham. Everyone has opinion on them (which can swing either way), which basically tells us that they reach a LOT of people and are memorable. Both have their own unique quirks or trademarks as well as their own personal version of "Je ne sais quoi", which then adds intrigue. For these reasons people remain ever curious about them even if they're not their biggest fan! Love 'em or loathe 'em, they've both still managed to create a very powerful brand.

book of the month
a must read book on my bookshelf ...

Re-magine - Tom Peters

Re-imagine! by Tom Peters

brief synopsis
Business guru Tom Peters challenges business thinking with this infuriating yet inspiring book. It certainly has the approach of trying something different and this goes from the discussion points, to the font, layout and structure. It certainly will help you to look at corporations and the way they work in a new perspective. This book is one to dip in and out of when you are looking for ideas and strategies on business past, present and future.

All the answers you want to know on how you can make networking work for you.

name: Rachel Daniel

role: Regional Director - City & West Essex

What advice or tips can you give someone who is just learning about networking?

  • Try all sorts of networking events at all sorts of times and find out what works for you best - some are more informal and some are more structured so decide which one you prefer (you might even like both)
  • Don't try and sell - this is not networking and switches people off - instead, plan to find out as much as you can about other people and meet with them separately to tell them more about you
  • Don't think you will get business immediately - you need to build trust and a bond with a person before they feel they know you well enough to tell their friends or clients about you
  • Try and meet with as many people outside of the network event as you can - don't be scared about asking to do this, even if people are busy, a meeting can be arranged for a month or so in the future
  • Lose the masks and just be yourself - being honest is the best way forward and people always respond best to your 'authentic self'

How would you define the term 'networking'? What does it mean to you?

Networking for me is all about connecting with people and building long-term relationships based on mutual respect. In a nutshell, it's all about making friends! By finding out where I can be of help to other business people, opportunities are maximised and my generosity is repaid tenfold.
